*Wine Storage*

To reach the proper wine serving temperature, it is best to have the correct type of home storage unit so your wines are kept at a constant 55-60°F. How your wine is stored will directly effect the final flavor, color and character of each bottle of wine you purchase. Many bottles of wine you purchase will be consumed immediately. However, even those kept for a few weeks or months can be positively or negatively impacted by the type of wine storage you use.

The most important consideration in proper wine storage is temperature. It's also about these  factors:
  • Light Level--Wine likes the darkness. Wine bottles and many wine coolers are tinted with dark colored glass to allow very little light to get to the wine. Never store your wine in direct sunlight or a well lit room. The two problems light and heat will deteriorate your wines quality.
  • Ventilation and Vibration--Outside air will seep into your wine bottles through the cork. Take measures not to store wine near paint, chemicals or odors for long periods of time. Also take measures not to store your wine in areas that are heavily trafficked/near household appliances or anything that can create vibrations. Wine is delicate and it's components can break down over time if exposed to heavy vibration.
  • Storage Angle and Humidity--Wine bottles should be stored either horizontally, at a 45 degree angle with the cork facing down or somewhere in between. This will keep the wine in constant contact with the cork ensuring no air gets into the bottle. High humidity can cause mildew or rot on the cork. Low humidity can cause the cork to dry out and crack, allowing more air into the bottle. The ideal humidity level for home wine storage is 60-70%
